Hair Restoration
Hair thinning is a common problem affecting both men and women. Thankfully, there are many effective treatments available when the underlying cause is appropriately identified and treated.
What is Hair Restoration?
One of the treatments available in the Galway Skin Clinic is called PRP, or Platelet Rich Plasma. PRP is a nutrient rich fluid, plasma, that is isolated from a patient’s own blood sample.
PRP takes advantage of our innate healing ability to stimulate tissue growth, proliferation and repair. PRP can be extremely effective in stimulating follicles to produce thicker, healthier and stronger hair.
PRP is especially useful in treating patients concerned by alopecia and male pattern baldness. A holistic approach to care is key in ensuring the best results. Treatment may focus on PRP in isolation or may include the addition of prescription medication, either topically or orally.
Progress is tracked in our clinic by using a specialised follicle camera which can accurately assess how an individual is responding to treatment. Best results are seen when the treatment is done as a series of three sessions once a month with a top-up treatment done every 6-12 months thereafter.
The benefits
The Process
Prior to the procedure, a local anaesthetic is applied to the scalp to ensure a comfortable experience.
A blood sample is extracted from a patient in a specialised container and processed in a centrifuge. This process isolates the platelet rich plasma and removes potentially inflammatory chemicals.
This plasma mixture which contains plasma, growth factors and platelets is then injected into the scalp where it can stimulate the hair follicles to proliferate and thicken.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long will it take to see results?
Results are generally visible after 6 weeks and will be monitored in clinic with our follicle assessment camera.
Is the treatment once off or are several treatments required?
Best results are seen when the treatment is done as a series of three sessions once a month with a top-up treatment done every 6-12 months thereafter.
Is there any downtime?
The area treated will appear red following treatment and there may be some minor bruising. Clients should avoid swimming, saunas, UV exposure and vigorous exercise for 2 days following the treatment. Alcohol, caffeine and certain medication should be avoided for at least three days?
I’m a smoker, is PRP the right treatment for me?
PRP is an investment, many of the growth factors we rely on are inhibited by smoking. This is why smoking causes premature aging of the skin. We would strongly encourage and support our clients in stopping smoking as the first step in improving their overall skin health.
